The LSN Prize 2012

The Leong Sin Nam Prize was established during the 72nd Anniversary Celebration on 19th January 2012. The award ceremony was held at the Perak Kaying Association.

This picture was taken at the Tanjung Rambutan waterfall. Lots of fun as you can see. I have not met Wong Yew Thye (left most) since leaving school. He was our Head Prefect and is now an engineer.

This is Ong Choo Keat if I remember correctly. Wow look at the abdominals! You can count them. Well we were all about that slim then. But now..... we are even shy to take off our shirts!!

Exhibition on Chinese Revolution in Hainan Association

Picture taken during the Opening Ceremony of the Chinese Revolution (1911) Exhibition in the Hainan Association, Ipoh, Perak. The Penang Sun Yat San Society supplied the exhibits. Dr. Sun met his supporters in various locations in Perak. The Perakians donated a large sum of money towards the Revolution. We should document the SYS trail in Perak and make it a tourist attraction like in Penang and Singapore.

Tinnitus - Ringing in the Ears

Tinnitus is the medical term for ringing in the ears. I had tinnitus at 7.00 pm in Hospital Fatimah today after emerging from ICU. To my pleasant surprise Jingle Bells was ringing in my ears. The carollers were from the St. Michael's Church. I followed them up to Ward 4 C and recorded two songs before I headed home. The youthful choir was more enthusiastic. They planned to sing in every ward to bring in the Christmas cheer.

Healesville Sanctuary, Australia

At Healesville Sanctuary near Melbourne. There is an abundance of Koalas in the sanctuary. Koalas love Eucalyptus tree leaves. I used to have 5 Eucalyptus trees in my home. They were planted by my father who was ever fascinated with the tree while he was studying in Australia. The leaves are used to make medicated oils for body aches and pain.

Here you see a vet nursing the Tasmanian devils. These cats in Tasmania are threatened by a disease which causes facial tumours.

And me inside the tree. Pondering how it feels to be 250 years old.

A water fowl with her eggs. Reminds me of avian flu. A hot topic a couple of years ago because of a possible link with the flu pandemic.

The ACS TuckShop Prefects. Mr. Yeoh Eng Soon led the team to make sure the students eat graciously. Spitting was not allowed. Loud talking was prohibited (very good training to keep restaurants less noisy). Running was not allowed while eating to prevent choking. Students were ordered to return the cups and plates back to the various food stalls after eating.

So you see, all of us have very good table manners now.

Mr. Yeoh Eng Soon was the Senior Assistant. I last met him many years ago at a petrol station and I heard he had gone back to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. I remembered him as a kind teacher. He showed me how to wear the special sash which you see in the photo. I was estatic to be a TuckShop Prefect!!!

The ACS Grand Prix - 1975

Zooom. It's the ACS Grand Prix! This is a charity project organised by: Leong Oon Keong, Chen Tet Ngian, Khor Chin Guan, Chen Set Ngian, Timothy Liew, Julian, Lee Hock Hin, Lee Hock Soon and Cheah Teng Gin. The profit was $100.00 and was given to the Benefit Society. It was a lot of money then when a bowl of mee just cost 50 cents. I am not sure whether our currency then was called the ringgit yet.

Here you can see Mr. Ng Chee Pin (Science), Mr. Mak Kim Yeng (Art, English), Ms Ong Su Ming (English literature), ?, Mrs. Liew Nyuk Choong, Mr. Justice Havelock having great fun driving the model cars. This Scalextric Racing Circuit was set up by the organisers. We had to borrow very many racing tracks from several school mates to create a really long 4 lane racing circuit which occupied the Science Laboratory.

Mr. Ng is still lecturing in a private college in KL. You will be able to meet him in Kok Thai Restaurant during Chinese New Year.

Ms. Ong is in Ipoh and is the President of KAMI (Kinta Alliance for the Mentally Ill). She is well remembered for her lessons in Macbeth.

Mr. Mak had a stroke and passed away some years back. I meet Mrs. Mak (Doong Lay Huong) in the Canning Garden Methodist Church every Sunday.

Mrs. Liew is still going strong. She is well remembered for teaching us how to find books in the library using the Dewey Decimal system. She is in my small church group. Her husband, Mr. Liew is a pharmacist whom I remembered dispensing medicine in George Town Dispensary and later Himalaya Pharmacy, both favourite haunts of my father.

Mr. Justice Havelock taught me wood crafting. I love wood working and I am still dreaming to make my own dining set one of these days so I can invite you all for dinner. Mr. Havelock is now residing in Australia.

Standard 4 and the class teacher was Mrs. Cheah May Lian. I am not sure whether her name is spelt correctly. I need to find her son Mr. Cheah Tong Kim to confirm. I cannot remember much about what she taught in class but I certainly remembered her coming to my parents house to watch TV. She stayed opposite our house and I was told that her husband was killed by the Japanese.

TV sets were a rarity then. Ours was a Grundig.... and we would not have heard about Sony, Samsung or LG. It was a black and white TV about 38 inch. There were two fold able wooden doors which were used to cover the screen when the TV was not in use. And the antennae would sit on top of the set.

It was the Olympic season then and Mrs. Cheah would come over to watch her son swim in the world event. Mr. Cheah Tong Kim was an Olympic Swimmer representing Malaysia. I am not sure whether he got the gold medal but he was really hunky, someone with that enviable V shaped body.

Mr. Cheah is currently a very active Toast Master member. I see him often in church. He was the Master of Ceremony during my wedding day. Thank you Tong Kim.

Tan Chik Kaw the pharmacist from UK is back in Ipoh for a short family visit. Great to see him again. Amongst us he is the top contender for the "balding head" competition.

We just learnt that Yau Sook Fun is the grand daughter of Yau Tet Shin, the person who built the Yau Tet Shin Market in Ipoh. He was also responsible for bringing Ipoh town across the Kinta River to become the Ipoh New Town.

We were at Old Town White Coffee shop (opposite Ipoh Padang) at 4.00 pm. Others present were Victor Chan Kok Meng, Chan Nyat Keong, Leong Oon Keong and Chan Sum Mee.

Great meeting. The next will be ........ soon.

Paul TehTeik Heng was a good friend. He was the son of Datuk Teh Siew Eng a close family friend. I remembered playing with him in the school field and on the 3 tiered high wooden benches. And guess what I did? I pushed him down and he broke his arm!! He probably had a green stick fracture which required an arm sling for several weeks. What did I get for punishment?

Perak Kaying Association 111th Anniversary Celebration

This year we are celebrating the 100th Anniversay of the Wuchang Uprising which led to the founding of the Republic of China. The Perak Kaying Association was founded 11 years earlier. The 111th Anniversary Celebration of the Association was held at the New She Lai Ton Restaurant in Ipoh on 1/11/2011 (a very auspicious day with 8 ones). The food was good and the entertainment was great. There were about 500 people.

The 3 new "Lions" donated to the Perak Kaying Association. They will be employed during Chinese New Year and other celebrations.

The Choir of the Association. Singing practices are held in the Perak Kaying Association building weekly. Famous for their Hakka folk songs.

The President Dato Hew Choy Kon in his speech reminded the guests about the contributions of the Hakka community towards the development of Perak.

The ACS Primary School Magic Club lead by Mr. Samuel Seow (left) the magician. This picture was taken in 1966. Mr. Low Chooi Beng (right) was the principal then. Mr. Samuel continued to teach magic to the students for many years and even opened a magic shop in Anderson Road. I bought a magic wand, several decks of cards, match boxes, ropes etc and practised magic but failed to qualify as a magician. Mr. Paul and Mr. Peter, sons of Mr. Samuel Seow, learned the trade but left later to serve the Lord Jesus Christ till today. Mr. Samuel Seow is now a devoted Christian and is a member of the Canning Garden Methodist Church where I usually meet him to "yum cha".

I still remember the picture "The Return of the Mummies". A real scarry movie for me then. Mr. Samuel was my class teacher once and I still remember his English dictation classes. He had a big bat to frighten you if you get lots of mistakes in English spelling. Now my Inglish spelling is pretty good. Keep it up Mr. Samuel.

The first year of my life in Ipoh. I don't recall very much about this period except to say that the bed which is pictured here stood the test of time. This spring bed has rubber mattresses and 2 rubber wheels at the head end. The frame is made of iron and it is completely mobile.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Wuchang Uprising which lead to the founding of the Republic of China. Dr. Sun Yat Sen received overwhelming support from the Nanyangs including Towkay Leong Sin Nam.

We have produced a 30 minute slide presentation titled "Perakian Contributions to the Chinese Revolution of 1911" to honour the people and their sacrifices towards the cause of freedom.

I think we started the annual CNY minum-minum way back in 1993 or earlier, which mean we had met in Ipoh for more than 18+ years. Most of the time it will be at Miner's Arm in old town. once at Oon Keong's place plus a couple of times where we sort of wandered to GreenTown. The number of us would vary from year to year; there was one year where it was only FongFatt and I wandering around GreenTown. We had a good crowd this year though not as many as the year in Oon Keong's place. Interesting characters graced the evening - we had a guru besar cermelang (hope the spelling is correct), someone back from cold cold Russia, an American cow...etc.

Hope we can keep this going as long as possible thought Miner's Arm is a bit of disappointment as it is now a karaoke centre rather than the good old pub that we knew. I miss the horse shoe sofa that we always occupy......

Hello everyone,

Some of us ACSians managed to squeeze some time to attend last night's dinner 15 June at Delicious Restaurant in Bangsar attended by the usual very supportive kaki's namely Kee Kuang, Nyat Keong, Hong Yik, Dr Sukdershan, Dr Manjit (who despite his very busy dental schedule managed to grace the occassion), Mun Ngor (who took time off again to come all the way from Batu Pahat), Chi Wi (back for hols from Taiwan). Edmund Ewe resurfaced after so many years absence & we wish our brother a warm welcome.

2. We were also very lucky as the usual guys gathering this time was graced by 3 ladies from Form Six Sc. C ie Wai Lan, Lay Ian and Sook Fun (if not mistaken came all the way from Ipoh).

3. Our brother King Loon only arrived after dinner ended but all was not lost as some of us adjourned with him for teh tarik at Devi's Corner

5. Good news as Dr Manjit has proposed to arrange a future gathering of ACSians possibly at Selangor Club, Bukit Kiara (he is a member). We look forward to this and hope many can attend.

UM surgeon wins international breast cancer award

KUALA LUMPUR, Wed:

Prof Dr Cheng Har Yip, a surgeon with University Malaya Medical Centre, has received an international award for her outstanding work in breast cancer treatment.

She was awarded the UICC (International Union Against Cancer) 2009 Reach to Recovery International Health Professional Award at a conference held in Brisbane, Australia, last week.

She was the only recipient outside Australia to receive the award from the United States based body.

“As much as I am happy to receive it, I also want women in Malaysia to come for screening and early detection of the disease,” she said when met at the 15the UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference in Brisbane.

Dr Yip, a breast surgeon at UMMC, said 1 in 20 Malaysian women would develop breast cancer in their lifetime and Chinese have the highest incidence followed by Indians and Malays. She also said 1 in 16 women, for both Chinese and Indian, were at risk of getting breast cancer as compared with 1 in 28 Malay women. “The commonest age at which a woman can get the disease is between 40 and 49 years. My greatest concern is Malay women who come in at later stages with larger tumours. Consequently their survival rate is worse than with Chinese and Indian women,” she added.

She said the challenge in Malaysia was to be able to provide a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Dr Yip started the breast clinic in UMMC in 1993 and has written over 70 articles on the subject in medical journals.

She is the chairman of the National Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Breast Cancer in Malaysia and is on the Council of the College of Surgeons of Malaysia.

She is an exco member of the Asian Breast Cancer Society, a member of Breast Surgery International and also sits on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Breast Health Global Initiatives Foundation.

“My research interest are in the epidemiology, early detection and management of breast cancer in developing countries,” said Dr Yip, who works closely with breast cancer support groups and non-governmental organisations to promote health awareness and early detection of breast cancer.

For those who missed our nite out with WaiHoong....its back to nostalgic ice kacang as after dinner treat since we could not have the durians; the SS2 durian stall was too packed contrary to all the talk about recessions and people spending less. Time has changed though....ice kacang is now is now served in fanciful glass and cost RM2.30 compared to 20 cents back in the seventies....sighhhh those were the days especially the ice-bola kacang that cost only 10 cent per ball. So enjoy all these stuffs while they are still affordable.....

Good turnup, good catchup and a fun night of coconut water, air swam (is that how it is spelt?), chinese tea, beer, wine and whisky. We have prof yip, fongfatt, chatphui, tuckseng, feichiew, foowah & wife angie, alvin, nyatkeong, keecheong, maysan, wanhon, yours truly and surprise-surprise we have seechun who came later and his first time with the group....welcome..at least we have one more from USB other than OnnKeong . It appeared that our group is growing larger as we get more mature......

Raj aka Nalliah Rajalingam been back to Malaysia annually for last 3-4 years and it was only through NK that we finally met up with him tonite.......after 34 years. It was a small gathering but the catch-ups was good especially exchange of views of what (we think) is happening globally and expectation of 2009. Some of the ideas were profound but mostly incomprehensible...e.g why the USD is gets stronger as US's economy gets more teruk, talk about the confederation of US, Canada and Mexico and their new currency or why printing of money is not such a bad idea as a way out of recession.

Anyway hope to see Raj more often and trust he and Leona will have a safe trip back to Sydney tomorrow nite. God Bless.....

Was in Ipoh on Saturday night for the 113 anniversary of our alma mater with NK. One of the highlights was the singing of the school song.....and for one moment I thought Mr Chin YK might consider singing the Horley Hall's anthem. There were some 50 tables altogether which work roughly out an average 2 tables per year but then again as usual there are more active exACS for certain years....class of 75/73 was under-represented as I estimated there were less than 10 of us. Class of 1978 seem to be most active and apparently they have collected RM26k for the school during one of their reunions.

Yong Been and families were there and also managed to catch up with Ngan Sing. At our table was OnnKeong, NK, Sook Fun, Mr Lam Poh Wah (an old teacher turned remiser), Moon Chong and his friend Simon, another couple whom I did not catch their names and an old fren whom most of us have not seen for a looooong time. Have a guesss of who he is ....

I am refering to the guy in white....and on the left is Lam Poh Wah.

This CNY gathering is truly remarkable. Gathered are some whom I have not met since I left ACS in 1976. Perhaps this gathering is the beginning of something bigger next year. Thanks to Kee Kuang for sending out a timely email to meet. Surprisingly most of the people gathered are actually staying in KL now. We shall definitely try harder to gather more classmates who are staying in Ipoh next year. Perhaps more teachers too.

Monday 24th December was surely a night to remember. Mr. YB Lim and wife were in our Canning Garden Methodist Church for Christmas Eve Service. Met them for a short while after service. I was looking out for them in the Garden Terrace where light refreshments were served. Couldn't find them but surprise, surprise.......... found Mr. Chong Fong Fatt and family instead. That was the first time I met his charming wife and family.

These balloons were released to the kids. It was such a spectacular and colourful sight.

My son attended the KIDS Christmas Party held in the Canning Garden Methodist Church, Ipoh. I was the camera man responsible for putting up the pictures in our church website. Each child took home one sock and there weren't enough to go around.

I realise from the blog archive that it's been five months since my post on our memorable meet-up with Yong Been in Ipoh in July and our 'Korean' is back in town again! He seems to like the relaxed, laid-back Ipoh life after having lived in big cities in the States, Korea and Hong Kong. He is back with wife Karen, to chill out and play golf at the Meru Resort and and is looking to acquire a property. And why not, with the dirt-cheap prices of properties here which, coupled with the lower cost of living, amongst others, make this an ideal place for retirement.

A few of us met up for dinner at the Mun Choong Restaurant behind Lido. It was great to have a teacher join us this time too - Mr Chin Yoong Kim. Good food, good drink (wine with compliments of Mr Chin), warm camaraderie make an enjoyable evening.

We have Mr. Liew Kam Chong here. He was at my clinic to raise funds for the giant ACS "kolam" which entered the Malaysian Book of Records. Unfortunately it was reported in the newspaper that the project wasted many bags of rice which could had been used to feed the poor.

The heroes here are seated: Teh Moon Chong, Chan Joon Hoong, Leong Oon Keong, Lam Poh Wah. Standing: Teh Chor Aun, Chan Kok Meng, Hung Ching Chai. Mr. Lam Poh Wah is making millions with the current bull market. Mr. Teh Chor Aun loves travelling far and near. Mr. Hung Ching Chai will fix up your car's air conditioner and battery with a special discount.

Mr. Loke Choong Meng is on the right. He was our Industrial Arts teacher majoring in mechanics. He is currently very active in our MNS (Malaysian Nature's Society) Perak branch and loves "bird" watching.

6th October 2007 is surely a day to remember. About 500 ACS teachers, students old and new gathered for their annual reunion dinner at the Hee Lai Ton Restaurant Ipoh. Can you imagine singing the ACS anthem once again?! Followed by "Tiny Bubbles" and "Pearly Shells" songs lead by the original maestro Mr. Chin Yoong Kim. Surely it was a nostalgic night. I came out of the gathering truly refreshed having met so many former school mates, teachers and mentors.

I bet the teachers felt better than I did. Can you imagine how they would feel when former students of theirs come forward to greet them and thank them for all they have done? I believe its the sence of appreciation that matters for most of them. Surely, they are reminded that their sacrifices have not been in vain.

This is the first instalment of the pictures which I have taken. I shall publish the rest later. There are some problems with streamyx today.

Another yakking session this time in honour of Professor Ong ChiWi from Sun Yat Sen University, Koahshung and his resume : Two primary schools at one go, and two secondary schools, three universities (UM for six months, Liverpool for 3 yrs and Cambridge for 3 years), worked in Canada for a year and now in Taiwan . Have been a Professor in Chemistry since 1986.

The topics that hogged the nite discussion was how to export tongkat ali to Taiwan, new commercial ideas on biofuels and by products of palm oil, whether there is a big market for bird nests in Taiwan.....etc. Unfortunately Yew Ai could not make it last nite otherwise we would get a deeper insight of oil's effect on human being....well there is always the next time I suppose.

It was also good to see Hua Chek especially his passion for saliva of the birds....

Tuck Seng telling Chak Pooi thats not the way to do it......while Hua Chek smiling away and Prof Ong trying to make peace. Well I think we all enjoyed ourselves.

Nice get-together amidst relax environment at our favourite joint ..... The Rock Garden Steamboat Restaurant. Nope we did not order "chew pai" steamboat and had some other yummy stuffs instead together with some white & black stuffs.

The first one is straight forward.....our swimming pool. Just wondering whether it is still there or has become a koi pond. Remember some of the gals used have their periods everyweek - on the day where there was a swimming period.

For those who missed (including me) this article in the NST, here is an extract on comments and thoughts from our own educator YSF....& hopefully I can get a nice pic (wink, wink) to go along with it. Anyway well-done and congratulation to Sook Fun for such great achievement....among which I believe she is the only non-Malay HM in a rural Malay school. Read on.....

Sharing her sentiment about poor English standards is Yau Sook Fun, headmistress of Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Dendang, Selama, Perak, a small, rural school with 12 teachers and 138 pupils.

To her, the most memorable event for 2006 was training a choral speaking team to participate in the District Level Choral Speaking Competition. This created a need to learn the language. The number of hours they trained also increased meaningful language learning contact time.

Yau says: "When the team emerged fourth in Larut Matang and Selama District, against established urban schools such as Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Kota and Sekolah Kebangsaan Klian Pauh, Taiping, the teachers and parents were surprised.

"It was a great achievement for a rural school, which had never taken part in such a competition."

Yau, who teaches English, science and mathematics, agrees that teaching English is an uphill battle. As the administrator of the school as well as the Master Teacher for English, one of her main concerns in 2006 was to improve the standard of English in the school.

"English is a subject which determines the overall performance of schools in the UPSR. I adopted several strategies. Although rote learning is sometimes frowned upon, I found memorising an effective technique to remember words, phrases and sentences. I wish phonics will find its way into the school system for preschool and Year One. It will help students master reading."

Yau’s strategies worked and with the cooperation of dedicated teachers, her school achieved 83.3 per cent passes in English in 2006 compared with 46.9 per cent passes in 2005. The overall results impr& full article can be viewed atoved from 46.9 per cent (2005) to 72.2 per cent (2006).

ACS USC is straight forward, Anglo Chinese School Upper Science C but what is TAG? Well...... it is not tau sau pow or those sort of stuffs. It is something I just coined....TAG = Teluk Anson Gang even though it should be called TIG cos Teluk Anson is now Teluk Intan but TA sounds more nostalgic, exciting & far away la.

After so-so many years we met for lunch today and for those who do not know all the 4 of us (including me) had our origins in Teluk Anson (now Teluk Intan) also better known as the town with the Leaning Tower of Perak. I was born in TA and only came to Ipoh after standard 3.

Lunch was simple but the company & fellowship was great and plus all the catchups....some very funny and others simply delicious. Also discovered or rather we decided that we were all sort of related somewhere plus another one in Oz. Hemhemmmm what a discovery but better late than never! Its sort of a bit long and complicated maybe I will update that in another blog ....

The row of shops became a movie set for the shooting of HK movie 'Lust, Caution' directed by Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, and starring Tony Leung. The old shophouses have been in a dilapidated condition and left vacant for a long time. The street scene has been spruced with with lots painted-on signs, signboards, bamboo blinds, antique lamp posts, etc. to make it look like old Shanghai in the 30's.

Visited the Toy Museum in Penang over the weekend. This museum was featured in the newspapers a couple of weeks ago. It belongs to an engineer with a passion for toys. He has collected these toys over the years. Its really good but the entrance fee is rather expensive. Adults rm 10 and children rm 6. Will post more pictures next. Uploading pictures into blogger is very slow. Well we cannot be young anymore but at least be youthful and enjoy life. Cheers.

This is the street where we had our first coffee house in Ipoh... abJ. I think I just went there once or twice....too expensive for me then even for a cup of chocolate float. At one stretch of time Foo Wah, Hong Yick and I would be watching midnight movies every saturday nites. Those were the days .....riding our little cupchai...young and free

Ipoh Padang.....just a strong throw from HSBC and Miners Arm. Also remember cheering the school hockey team playing against the Andersonians and the Michaelians (is that correct??....so we were the ACSians....hahaha)

Ah-hah, one of our favourite hangout spots (these days we dun hang out, only chillout....) Some of us would remember the jogets (10sen per dance?) and the games machines (pre Bill Gates era). Also SumMee's bicycles shop (or rather bicycles parking shop) is across the road

Rex cinema gone for a while...new look but somehow still look very 70s...maybe its the way TMC snapped it. Further done the road (Hume Street) was where I used to hang around caligrapher Foo Wah. My father famous hotel is just a few streets away.

Day after the 7Km Run of the 2006 KL Marathon....

Reflections

Hmmmm....I survived the run. Not bad considering that I have not run for quite a long, long, long time...and all I managed was to put in some "practice" runs in the gym & around the office a week before that.

The Day
Got up at 5.20am as I needed to pick Josh's fren Keen Wai and then set off to pick Josh (he stayed overnight at his best fren's place). Discovered that the highway leading there was closed (for the full marathon) and we had to detour to Pantai before reaching Taman Desa. As we set off we discoverd we had not prepared properly....gosh we were hungry. Fortunately Josh's fren Foo Seng had some bananas......good source of energy.

The Race
Soon it was time to start off from Dataran Merdeka. Agghhh...too many people infront, just had to let the crowd run first and started a steady (old man talk) pace. Strangely stamina was not an issue (probably becos of the slow pace) but the tightness/pain around the left ankle and ahhemmm...the bladder gave some issues. Well, mind over matters....there will always be something that will not be right with the body when you run these races.

First milestone after Dataran Merdeka....Pudu Jail. Sweats, pain,burning heart, pumping lungs, a full bladder & NO finishing line in sight....but I must go on....loh behold I reached the Lot 10 junction. Still a long way to go....shall I stop or go on?!! I must continue (my surname is Hum, you know.....) and finally around Sheraton Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail (maybe with another 3 or only 2 km to finishing line) I had to walk to ease the pain. Walked briskly for 200 metres and started running again....strangely the pain went away. Smooth running after that and soon it was the turn to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman....and loh....from far I see the tallest flagpole in the world (the most beautiful sight). I preservered and continued running, finished the race and survived.

The Reward

The reward.....nasi lemak with curry chicken and plenty of sambal with a hot cup of teh tarik with Josh and his frenz.

Hiking in Pat Sin Leng

We went hiking in the Pat Sin Leng Country Park today. It is called the Pat Sin Leng in Cantonese which is translated to the "Eight Immortals" because of the eigth peaks.

Although we all think that HK is a concrete jungle, this is not so. About 60% of the territories is park land and there are many trials. The Pat Sin Leng is part of the Wilson trial that stretches from HK island to the New Territories to the border with Shenzhen.

There is a surprise diversity of flora in the Pat Sin Leng Country Park. Some of these are shown on the right. To view pictures of Kam Kwi and me, visit my blog

HK Marathon 2006

Ran in the 10 km race at the HK Standard Chartered Marathon last Sunday 12/2/06. There were about 20,000 runners for the 10 km race in several groups. I ran in the Master group (used to be called the veteran for the oldies). It was quite an experience to run with so many people together - for mutual encouragement. I did a slow jog and finished in 1 hour 06 minutes. Luckily no injuries or mishap. Unfortunately 1 runner (of the full marathon) collapsed half way and died in hospital 2 days later.

My wife ask me why I took part in this 'hazardous' activity? I don't really know but it may have something to do with getting old? As Onn Keong said getting to 50 makes him want to do things faster; many more things to do. I suppose joining the race is same. I want to take on new challenges while I still can. It would nice to hear from others what challenges they have taken recently.

Never bite the hand that feeds you: A well-trained dog would never intentionally bite its owner. It may occasionally snap at those that would do you harm. In business, we should never talk bad about our employers while we're working for them and especially after we've left them. Such words have a way of coming back to bite you in your behind when you least expect it. Ditto with friends who give you love - don't talk bad about them behind their backs. Say it to their face if you feel strongly enough about it.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners: Dogs reflect their owners' disposition. Angry owners make angry dogs. Happy owners make happy dogs. It's as simple as that. In the same way, there are no bad employees, only bad managers. There's a saying that goes, if you point the finger at someone, three fingers point back at you. Next time you're unhappy with someone for a reason, find three reasons how you could have contributed to the situation.

Live every moment: For a dog, there is no time like the present. NOW is what counts. Many self-help books, especially those on meditation, tell us to live the moment. Many of us say it, but truthfully, find it hard to live up to. Trapped as we are by the burdens of the past and the fear of the uncertainty of the future, we struggle to live in the now. Throw away those books, just observe dogs for a day. It's cheaper and, trust me, more fun.

Give unconditionally: Yes, yes, it's true that dogs do expect to be fed at the very least. But they do know the art of loving unconditionally. No matter what you do to them, they will remain loyal and faithful to you. Give without expecting anything in return. It's far more rewarding than calculating from the onset what you're going to get in return if you give. The pleasure comes from not expecting; the expected always disappoints.

Express yourself: Dogs do not hold back on expressing their feelings. They sulk when disciplined. They roll over shamelessly when they want their stomachs rubbed. They whine when they want something. They put their head on your lap when they want love and affection. They lick you when they want to say, "I love you too." We should learn to be equally expressive and spontaneous. Too often, we are afraid to express our feelings for fear of "what will others think of me". Truth is, most people are too self-absorbed to bother about other people anyway. We should say and do what we feel with those we care for. Make it easy for those who love us to love us.

Respect other species: Dogs may hate cats but they have a healthy respect for the felines. They may chase them but they know they could get their eyes scratched out if they are not careful. Similarly, we should have a healthy respect for other races and religions. We may not understand them but we should accept that they are part of our world. Just as dogs are. Next time you meet a dog, don't shriek, "Does it bite?". Instead, say hello and ask to shake its paw. Make friends with other species, not spurn them.

Play for your life: There is no sight more joyful than watching a dog run on the beach or across an open field. They bound with such abandon that it fills your heart with laughter. We should learn to play more. Have fun with our lives. Play in the sand. Run through an open field. Wallow in the mud. Stop at every tree to appreciate its beauty. Play with each other.

Never take a dump in your own backyard: A well-trained dog does not do its business in the house. My dog has the ability to choose the most remote and hardest-to-get-to spot, forcing me to wade through knee-high grass to clean up after him. He knows discretion is the better part of valour.
